Facelift Chang’an Zhi Xiang spotted out testing

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

In the past three years Chang’an motors have put some phenomenal effort into building their own car brand which largely started with the original Ben Ben minicar, but quickly spread to other cars such as the below soon to be launched Zhi Xiang.

The previous Zhi Xiang, although a good looking car, seemed to slightly boring. The new facelift version which will launch at the Beijing Auto Show gives the Zhi Xiang a more European rear end and will no doubt be popular due to its fairly low price bracket of 80,000rmb to 100,000rmb.

Chang’an to launch CX30 soft hybrid

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

The CX30 is not Chang’as’s first hybrid, previously they had worked on the Jiexun hybrid which garnered some international headlines for them, but it is not clear how they sold. The Jie Xun went onto service the Olympic Games in 2008 as part of the Green Fleet of cars that were on demand to service the Olympians.

The CX30 was developed in partnership with Bosch automotive with the technology being fairly well developed with it being suited to stop-start driving conditions in the city center. The stop-start system in the CX30 is able to save around 6-8% fuel compared to a similar sized displacement engines, the emissions are also down 12% over a similar sized engine.

Chang’ans marketing manager Mr. Wang Jun Ri revealed that by 2012 the majority of Chang’an models will be be utilising soft hybrid systems such as the above CX30.

Aptera heading to the PRC with electric sedan

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

Now the electric car market seems to be really hotting up with contenders both internally and externally putting China ahead as one of the more important markets for the electric car:

SHANGHAI — U.S. electric vehicle maker Aptera Motors is now in China looking for production partners, in order to significantly reduce costs and speed up volume production for markets in North America and China.
In 2011, Aptera Motors of San Diego, California, will launch the Aptera 2e; a two-door, three-wheel vehicle. “We would build vehicles here and send them back to the U.S.,” says Paul Wilbur, president and CEO of Aptera Motors.
For China, however, the company plans to sell different version of the same version. “For China we’re really interested four doors as this would be a more mainstream vehicle,” said Aptera President & CEO Paul Wilbur, in an interview with Automotive News China in Shanghai.
“Our plan is to bring a four-door model out two years after we launch the two-door model,” said Wilbur. “If we can find production partners we will have a much more rapid growth strategy for China and the rest of the world,” he said.
“I think it would be pretty easy to start production in China as most of our suppliers are here,” Wilbur added.
Wilbur revealed his company is in talks with three local automakers interested in partnering with Aptera, although he declined to name them.
The 2e is powered by BorgWarner’s new eGear Drive 31.03 transmission system. It uses a lithium iron phosphate battery made by A123 Systems.
Unusually, the model weighs 818 kilograms and has no metal in the body. Built by a new American supplier, Energetx, the body is made using a foam filled with resin which when hardens is stronger than steel.
“Making the body lighter makes the battery smaller as well as the brakes and wheels, so the total weight is about half the weight of the Nissan Leaf,” said Wilbur.
Aptera’s battery charger is made by Delphi Automotive together with Delta-Q Technologies Corp. The German supplier Continental Automotive makes the brakes, while seats are made by Lear and the model’s safety system by TRW Automotive. The vehicle’s electric motor is made by Remi and its diagnostics by German supplier TT Tec.
The vehicle has four air bags — a driver airbag, passenger airbag and two side airbags made by TRW Automotive. It has a top speed of around 145 km per hour.
The vehicle takes 8 to 10 hours to recharge on a 110 volt outlet or 2-3 hours on 220 volt outlet. It has built in regenerative braking ability to recharge 30 percent of the battery.
“All crash tests have been passed and this vehicle can drive on freeways today,” said Wilbur, adding; “In the U.S. market this vehicle is considered a motorcycle due to its three wheels.”
In the U.S., the two-door 2e will be priced between $25,000 and $45,000. In China, Aptera expects to sell the four-door version for around $20,000 or 136,500 yuan.
As well as Aptera’s offerings, the Nissan Leaf is also expected to go into production soon.

Dongfeng’s first crossover spotted out testing

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

Dongfeng started with its own small car range several years ago and seems to have hit a sweet spot with certain models, especially with the Fengshen, or the S40 as it more commonly known in English. The S40 came in sedan form and hatch form but with the hatch version being known as the H30, which has now been given a crossover makeover that will appeal to those that require a car to have extra black plastic parts on it and raised suspension.

The Crossover scene has exploded in China with the launch of the Suzuki SX4 several years ago, now many car manufacturers have learned of the old Western trick of adding black plastic cladding to their motors to raise the prices 10-15% and to market them as lightweight offroaders in FWD guise. Dongfeng is not going to let a bandwagon pass it by and have come up with the H30 Cross, which will be on display at the Beijing Auto Show next month.

Team U.S.A. ‘Night Train’ Bobsled Makes New York Auto Show Appearance

Team USA Olympic bobsled

No steering wheel and neither two wheels nor four, so why are we bringing you this Olympic bobsled? Well, because it’s freaking awesome. And we don’t often get a chance to see a bobsled in person.

This “Night Train” practice sled—we, and even M-B PR staff, still have no idea why it’s here—was pushed out at the New York auto show by Steve Holcomb’s U.S. sled team during the 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-class unveil. We got a few minutes to talk with pushman Justin Olsen to find out a few more details about the bobsled experience and the team’s gold-medal-winning ride.

Team USA Olympic bobsled

Made in the U.S.A., the sled is composed of a fiberglass/Kevlar composite and weighs about 465 pounds—the minimum for a four-man sled is 464 pounds. There is no steering wheel but rather a right and left lever for controls and only one real “seat” for the driver. The rest of the crew sort of piles in behind him. Olsen said that each man’s position in the sled is critical for maximum speed and though there is no verbal communication between the teammates once they’ve filed in, sometimes they’ll give a tap to slightly reposition another member to achieve that optimum placement. Getting as low as possible is the goal for all the pushmen and the team even trains in the wind tunnel to determine the best aero. There is one hand brake at the rear that deploys a horizontal blade, but it isn’t used during the run, only after crossing the finish.

The sled reaches speeds around the 100-mph mark, and Olsen says it’s like riding a roller coaster with your eyes closed since he must keep his head down the entire ride. Sounds like fun to us.

Volkswagen Confirms Diesel Powertain for Passat-Replacing NMS

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

Volkswagen New Mid-Size Sedan NMS rendering

Today, during the U.S. debut of the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg at the New York auto show, VW of North America CEO Stefan Jacoby confirmed that the upcoming New Mid-Size Sedan (NMS) will have a diesel engine option for North America. The NMS, which is the working title for the Passat replacement, most likely will be powered by the current corporate 140-hp, 2.0-liter TDI turbo-diesel. We are crossing our fingers that maybe, just maybe, VW will give us the uprated Euro version which puts out 170 hp.

While little else is known about the NMS, we can tell you that it will be built at VW’s new plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, alongside the next Jetta, which was previewed by the NCC concept. VW previously handed out the above NMS sketch which shows that it will wear the current VW family face, as seen on the latest Golf and Touareg.

Look for the NMS to debut sometime later this year as a 2011 model; by then we should know its official name. We hope.

2011 Scion iQ – Auto Shows

Toyota’s microcar heads to the U.S. under the Scion banner.

The Toyota iQ, the world’s smallest four-seater, is headed to the U.S., but not as a Toyota. Scion finally confirmed what we’ve known for a while and announced at the New York auto show that it will be sticking its badge on Toyota’s tiny iQ when it comes stateside. To bring it in line with the other offerings from Toyota’s “youth-oriented” Scion brand, the iQ will get a bit more flash and flare than the Toyota version, with sharper, beefier front and rear fascias and more-muscular fenders.

At 120.1 inches long, the Scion iQ is a few inches longer than the Toyota version and just over a foot longer than the two-seat Smart Fortwo, but it’s still two feet stubbier than a Mini Cooper. The iQ’s 78.7-inch wheelbase is five inches longer than the Smart Fortwo’s, which makes space for the iQ’s innovative—you might also say “compromised”—rear seats. Scion calls it 3+1 seating, as it made room for an adult in the back by placing the front passenger’s seat closer to the windshield than the driver’s seat. Behind the driver, there’s room for a small child or a house cat—hence the +1. Rear-seat headrests are set right against the back glass, but don’t fear a rear-end collision; there’s a curtain airbag that deploys between the headrests and glass. The rear seats fold independently and with both folded, Scion says there’s enough room for two golf bags.

2011 Mazda 2 Priced From $14,730

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

2011-Mazda-2-blog-2-rear

Mazda today announced pricing for the 2 hatchback ahead of its July U.S. launch. The base price of $14,730 will get you a Sport model with a healthy list of standard equipment; upgrading to the Touring model, which nets things like fog lights, cruise control, and a six-speaker sound system, will set you back $16,185. Few options will be available, chief among them an $800 four-speed auto that replaces the five-speed manual transmission.

Mazda 2 pricing undercuts that of the Honda Fit ($15,610), as well as the Ford Fiesta five-door ($15,795) with which it shares underpinnings. (At $13,995, the Fiesta sedan does beat the 2 hatch, but we’re comparing Granny Smiths to Fujis.)

2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 – Short Take Road Test

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

2011 Ford Mustang GT

The new 5.0 is one hell of an engine, and it’s installed in one hell of a car.

The ingredients needed to make a Mustang: horsepower, horsepower, and more horsepower, plus a chrome pony, a glove box, and a cigarette lighter. Thankfully, Ford has embellished on this old-fashioned recipe with a car that handles, gets decent fuel economy when driven mildly, and doesn’t consume your driveway like the much larger and heavier Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger.

Since the Mustang went into production 46 years ago, Ford has made steady and incremental improvements over almost every year. The car has benefited, rising to the top of the muscle-car heap as others stagnated or went out of production. This year the changes are big, starting with a new four-cam, 32-valve, aluminum-constructed 5.0-liter V-8 (well, actually, it’s a 4.951-liter, but we’ll concede the difference).
