Tuesday Afternoon Crew Chief: The Couch Potato’s Dream Weekend

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

It was a great weekend for the auto-racing enthusiast: F1 from Spa, perhaps the best track on the schedule; MotoGP from Indy; ALMS from another great track, Mosport; and IndyCar at Chicago.

First to Spa. The wonderful road course in the Ardennes forest of Belgium, with its long straightaways and super-fast corners, is a place for F1 cars to perform as their designers intended. Lewis Hamilton did a marvelous job in changeable conditions during the race and was also brilliant in qualifying because the damp track at La Source corner on his second run cost him around 0.35 seconds—and he ended up less than a tenth behind Mark Webber’s Red Bull.

There was a lot of fuss about Sebastian Vettel’s crash in the other Red Bull with Jenson Button’s McLaren, but this was just a racing accident. Vettel lost control and, once the Red Bull went sideways at the high speeds they run on the back stretch at the track, he was a passenger. For Button, it was just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, I’m still mystified by what Rubens Barrichello was (or, most likely, wasn’t) thinking when he used Alonso’s Ferrari as a braking marker into the chicane: you’d think that a man who has 300 grands prix to his name (by some counts, as of this weekend) wouldn’t be making rookie-type mistakes.

The race of the weekend was at Chicagoland, however, where Dario Franchitti just held off Dan Wheldon in one of those frantic IRL oval finishes where 10 cars zip past the flag, seemingly separated by the length of a blanket. And the performance of the weekend, shading even Hamilton’s, was that of American rider Ben Spies on the Tech 3 Yamaha. Okay, he came in second to Honda rider Dani Pedrosa, but Spies beat both factory Yamaha riders, proving that his promotion to the works team next year is solidly justified, partnering Jorge Lorenzo. He’s the real deal. Mind you, I can’t wait to see Valentino Rossi riding for Ducati next year.

Finally, over to the ALMS, where a prototype finally caused a really big accident. All year, the front-running P2 cars have been trying to bully GT cars out of their way, as if they have a divine right to the track. The race ended with a red flag when Jonny Cocker’s Lola knocked Luke Hines’ GTC-class-leading Porsche 911 off, big time. When are the ALMS stewards going to start penalizing the prototype drivers for dangerous driving, because that’s what it is?

Mazda Shinari Concept Previews Next-Gen Mazda 6 – Auto Shows

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

As Mazda moves away from its Nagare design language, this concept shows what’s next.

The Mazda Shinari concept gives us a clear idea as to what the next Mazda 6 will look like. The first vehicle wearing a new Mazda design language dubbed Kodo (“Soul of Motion”), the Shinari concept is a gorgeous, if slightly overblown, four-seat coupe that looks like the lovechild of a Maserati GranTurismo and a Jaguar XF. The cab-rearward proportions; swoopy lines; and giant, 21-inch wheels give the impression that Mazda might be going after the likes of Mercedes, BMW, and Audi.

2012 Volkswagen New Beetle Rendered – Future Cars

2012 Volkswagen New Beetle Rendering

The cult of the Beetle demands a new edition, and VW will oblige.

Shockingly, despite a crazy (non-U.S.), VR6-powered RSi version and a midcycle face lift, the hype surrounding the New Beetle certainly died down over the past few years, and the car is due for a redesign. After all, it still uses the two-generations-old Golf IV’s PQ34 platform, which will live on only in emerging markets such as China.

Next-Generation Fuel-Economy Labels Unveiled

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation have unveiled significant revisions to the fuel-economy labels that are required on all new cars and light-duty trucks.

But the new labels aren’t yet final; two proposals were put forward. The EPA and the DOT are requesting feedback over the next 60 days (go to www.epa.gov/fueleconomy) before they finalize the design, which they expect to be rolled out in time for most 2012 models.

A redesign is necessary in order to be able to accommodate the variety of new technology choices that are available or will soon be, such as electric vehicles and hybrids with significant electric-only range. Today’s EV sticker, for example, lists EPA city and highway efficiency in units of kWh/100 miles, which is pretty impossible for a non-calculator-wielding consumer to compare at a glance with, say, a hybrid that’s rated in miles per gallon.

The proposals show that, going forward, all cars will be rated on a miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) scale, which converts alternative means of propulsion—such as electricity or natural gas—based on their energy content relative to that of a gallon of gasoline. Vehicles with multiple operating modes, such as the Chevy Volt—which can travel as far as 40 miles on electric-only propulsion—will have two ratings, one for efficiency while being propelled by the battery and a second for when the gas-engine generator is providing the electricity. A further addition for battery-powered vehicles is the required recharging time, although there was no mention as to the assumed power source used for this calculation. And, disconcertingly, the sample for an E85 flexible-fuel vehicle displays mileage figures for the vehicle exclusively while burning gasoline. When running on E85, fuel economy plummets by roughly 30 percent, and this should be clearly communicated to consumers.

Of course, these new labels don’t answer the most important question, which is how the two ratings for a vehicle such as the Volt will be combined into the single fuel-economy number. This number will be used for the all-important Corporate Average Fuel Economy (or CAFE) standard that automakers are required to meet.

In addition to fuel-economy information, the new labels add two emissions scores: one for tailpipe CO2 emissions and another for other air pollutants. Some argue, however, that this isn’t necessarily fair in the case of electric vehicles, which won’t get penalized for CO2 emitted during the creation of the electricity they use.

One of the proposals puts a prominent letter grade based on fuel economy and emissions at the top of the label—a scoring system so simple as to be perfectly understood, even by children. But is this really necessary? Although this writer is a numbers-loving engineer, I really don’t think it’s too much to ask the car-buying public to grasp the higher-is-better MPGe system. Plus, what makes for an “A” will no doubt shift as cars get more efficient over time, so letter-grade ratings likely won’t be comparable as time goes on, whereas the MPGe system doesn’t have this problem.

Although by and large the new labels make it far easier to compare cars that utilize different technologies, we have another suggestion. Currently, all cars have on their window sticker an estimated fuel cost for a year. Rather than this, we propose a cost-per-mile figure. That would make it easier for a potential buyer to see how long it might take to pay back the higher price of a hybrid or electric car. We’ve got 60 days to convince the EPA, so send them your feedback now!

Official pictures of Riich Z5 roadster leaked

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

The Chery Riich Z5 has been in development for a very long time, and is something that we have all been looking forward to seeing hit the roads. When the car was in development it was known as the Chery A6CC, and was likely to join the Chery A-series of cars but with the development of the Riich and Reely brands by Chery, it seems that the A6CC was upgraded to Chery’s Riich brand, which is aiming to be a semi luxurious brand for the Chinese market.

The Riich Z5 will come with a 2.0TCI engine, which translates into quite the little power plant for the Z5. The 2.0TCI engine is capable of 125Kw of power at 5500rpm and torque translates to 225Nm/1900rpm. However it seems that the Z5 will be coming in automatic form, which means some power is lost and ends up with 116kw of power but a torque increase to 250Nm thanks to the 5 speed automatic gearbox Chery plan on using.

Eventual pricing, or a launch date, has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be over 200,000rmb.

BYD backing away from worlds biggest car company dream

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

Late last year BYD announced it would be the world’s biggest car manufacturer by 2025, now it seems that BYD are backing out of that goal in a bid to shore up meager sales in their home markets.

Two years ago, BYD Auto announced its ambition with certainty to become the No.1 automaker by sales in China in 2015 and 2025 over the world.

Under the pressure of a weakening auto market in China, the Warren Buffet-backed carmaker has become more and more low-key since August 4 when it slashed its full-year sales target in 2010 by 25 percent to 600,000 units.

The company’s Shenzhen-based spokesman Lin Mi told the Global Times Tuesday that they had been overconfident in the auto market this year and BYD’s ability to expand capacity. The BYD, whose founder says the name stands for Build Your Dreams, has decided to tap on the breaks to work more on its brand image.

Poor sales

In the past five years, BYD’s annual unit sales almost doubled every year, hitting in 2009 448,000 units, nearly tripling the sales over the previous year.

“Sales in 2009 boosted our confidence in hitting our sales targets in 2015 and 2025. However, things are not running as smoothly as we expected,” Lin said.

Lin said the company’s internal sales target for this year was 1 million units, higher than 800,000, the target it made public.

Yet over the first seven months of this year, the company only met less than one third of its internal sales target in 2010.

Lin blamed the unexpected sales on seasonal factors, formidable weather conditions like floods and mudslides, and difficulties in expanding capacity to meet market demand.

“Unlike other automakers that outsource parts manufacturing, BYD produces all auto parts used on vehicles itself. If we expand our vehicle production capacity to 1 million or 800,000, we will have to equip our auto parts plants with proportional staff and production facilities. If we were able to do that, quality couldn’t be guaranteed,” said Lin.

Factory debacle

BYD’s expansion plan also ran into property problems. The Ministry of Land and Resources said July 15 BYD illegally built seven factories on 112 acres of farmland it agreed to buy in Xi’an from a local economic development agency.

BYD planned to spend 10 billion yuan ($1.47 billion) this year in expanding production capacity at its new energy production base, Changsha, Xi’an, and headquarters in Shenzhen.

The first batch of buses produced in Changsha have rolled off the assembly line and capacity expansion in Shenzhen also run smoothly.

A government decision on whether to punish BYD for the illegal factory construction will be made by September 30.

BYD’s existing Xi’an factory, built in 2005, can assemble 300,000 cars in the 3 series a year. The company previously planned to finish constructing the factories by 2011.

Increasing dealer pullouts in cities such as Beijing, Southwest China’s Sichuan Province and East China’s Zhejiang Province also held down BYD’s sales to some extent, though the company said its impact had been exaggerated.

Dealers including Ping Yong, BYD’s flagship dealer in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, have pulled out of BYD’s sales network this year, saying high inventory and BYD’s demanding management practices dried up their cash flows.

Lin said the public has made a fuss over BYD. “The sales network is a world of the survival of the fittest. Dealers joining and leaving networks is common to all automakers. More dealers joined us than those that left,” said Lin, who declined to provide exact numbers.

Ping Yong joined BYD’s rival Geely after breaking away from BYD, the China Business News reported.

BYD also delayed a mainland listing due to stock market downturn and said Monday it hopes to list on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange later this year. The company planned earlier to raise 2.85 billion yuan ($421 million) to finance battery, vehicle and auto parts projects.

Rolling out high-price vehicles

When asked whether BYD will readjust its plan to become the largest automaker both in China and the world, Lin provided no direct answer but said that BYD values branding and quality more than quantity.

BYD has been planning to launch five models this year, priced above 100,000 yuan ($14,713), to build BYD into a brand covering multiple products instead of remaining synonymous with low-end. These products are also expected to help improve profitability of the company.

BYD launched its first multi-purpose vehicle last week and a sedan late last month. Their impact on BYD’s sales remains yet to be seen. The company will launch other medium- and high-end models including another sedan and an SUV.

Rivals Geely and Chery are also motoring into the medium- and high-end market, which has long been dominated by joint ventures.

Geely will launch its first luxury multi-purpose vehicle this month. Chery began last year to sell high-priced vehicles under brands Riich and Rely. Analysts say competition between domestic automakers and joint ventures will be fiercer as both are now expanding into each others’ territory.

E6 go to US first

BYD founder and chairman Wang Chuanfu said Monday BYD will launch electric vehicles in the US later this year.

China launched a pilot program in June in five cities including Shenzhen to provide subsidies to buyers of electric and hybrid cars. Buyers of hybrids and electric vehicles could receive up to 50,000 yuan ($7,320) and 60,000 yuan ($8,826) in subsidies per unit respectively.

The Shenzhen government announced in July it would provide another 30,000 yuan ($4,413) and 60,000 yuan respectively.

Even with the government support, BYD sold no more than 500 F3DM plug-in hybrids this year in China.

“BYD might sell electric car E6 in the US first. Consumers there are more likely to accept electric vehicles than people in China,” said Lin. BYD said in late April it would open its North American headquarters in Los Angeles.

BYD is also planning to move into the new energy vehicle market in Europe. Lin said the company is visiting several cities right now, and the location of Europe headquarters is yet to be decided.

Greatwall’s new crossover SUV sighted

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

So far Greatwall’s SUV range have all been based on traditional chassis, which makes them great for hauling stuff which needs to be hauled, but it doesn’t give them great fuel economy and also keeps them large in size, the way forward for many other companies is to ditch the traditional body on frame SUV and go towards producing small crossovers. Toyota was arguably the first company to do so with the RAV4, and it seems Toyota is where Greatwall found their inspiration for their latest crossover:

greatwall-crossover-suv3
greatwall-crossover-suv2
greatwall-crossover-suv1
greatwall-crossover-suv

It would be unfair to call the new crossover a RAV4 clone, it certainly appears to be the same size but appears to be vastly different in styling and very unique when compared to the other raft of Chinese self developed SUV’s that are coming out at the moment.

Mazda Sky-G and Sky-D Engines – Car News

A deep dive into Mazda’s new gas and diesel four-cylinders reveals huge fuel-economy gains.

Around the world, automakers are grappling with the changes necessary to meet escalating fuel-economy regulations. To this end, Mazda is launching a new family of four-cylinder engines—fours power the vast majority of Mazda’s cars—called Sky-G (gasoline) and Sky-D (diesel). We drove both in prototypes of the next-gen Mazda 6 and, thankfully, either engine can be paired with the latest version of Mazda’s snick-snick six-speed manual.

2011 Suzuki Swift – Auto Shows

2011 Suzuki Swift

The cool little Suzuki sticks to a successful formula, and it will likely come to the U.S.

In the somewhat bleak landscape of Suzuki cars, one has always stuck out: the Swift, a small city car, earlier generations of which were sold in the U.S. as the Chevrolet Sprint and the Chevy/Geo Metro. Before you start laughing, let us inform you that the Suzuki Swift GTi, with a 100-hp, 1.3-liter four, was one of the hottest hatches of its time, about 20 years ago; and the current Suzuki Swift was an instant hit in Europe. (The latter has nothing to do with the Canadian-market Swift, which is a rebadged Chevrolet Aveo).
