Setting the record on Lotus NYO

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

Lotus NYO, the passenger car making arm of Lotus Group, launched its models in Beijing just over 10 days ago. Chinese media reports, and coincidently China Car Times and other Chinese focused automotive news websites reported that Lotus China had been forced to use the Lotus NYO and a new Chinese name due to a trademark dispute with Youngman Auto.

Youngman Auto has a joint venture with the Malaysian car making company, Proton which acquired Lotus in 1996. Youngman initially started producing Proton’s economy models under the Europastar brand but moved over to the Lotus brand as the Lotus brand was already known with Chinese auto sports affectionardos. However, Youngman are planning to redefine the Lotus brand, which they call Lian Hua in Chinese to further differentiate the brand from the Lotus NYO name and separate the economy models from Lotus’ high end sports range.

So why did they choose NYO? According to Lotus China’s PR man Mr. Yang Cheng, Lotus NYO sounds like new in Chinese and will go some way to separate the two brands. Mr. Yang was eager to point out that there is no issue with Youngman using Lotus.

Lotus NYO will sell three models in the Chinese market, the Elise, Evora and Exige but sales will be limited to just 200 models in the first year. Lotus NYO are aiming for a slice of the supercar pie that has already been divided up by Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini when Lotus sales begin in October 2011, over the next three years Lotus NYO are aiming to expand aggressively with up to 18 dealerships opening their doors across China.

Chery’s M16 being readied for production

This won’t be yet another mid size sedan from Chery that will clutter dealerships, instead it looks like the M16 will be carrying some interesting engine technology from Chery’s ATECO range. The 1.5DVVT engine will be packing 116bhp and 150Nm of torque, a 1.6DVVT will be available with 126bhp and 160Nm, while there will also be supercharged engines: a 1.3S producing an impressive 129bhp and 182Nm of torque, a 1.6S producing 150bhp and 205Nm of torque and also a range topping 1.8S producing 184bhp and 250Nm of torque. Chery is devoting a lot of time, energy and investment into developing the supercharged range of engines in cooperation with the American supercharging company Eaton.

CRV spotted in China yet again

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

The next generation of Honda CRV has been spotted out testing yet again on Chinese roads which has sparked a flurry of Chinese media interest in China’s best selling SUV. Honda ran away with the SUV market when it launched the current generation of CRV in the Chinese market with sales often breaching the 10,000 units per month barrier and often seeing peaks of 12,000 units in strong months, so its no surprise to learn that the CRV still has a major effect on the Chinese automotive media.

The CRV is likely to be unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show later this year, which is in Honda’s own Chinese backyard thanks to the Guangzhou Auto – Honda relationship. If you squint a bit, you might just be able to make out an SUV with four wheels:

BYD E6 popular but not so popular in Shenzhen

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

Reuters has some good analysis on the state of the E6 taxi pilot project which has seen BYD’s flagship pure electric vehicle take to Shenzhen’s roads over the past year. It appears that the E6 is gaining popularity with taxi-go’ers but not with the operators who say that the car is too expensive when compared to the VW Santana. Taxi riders appear to like the E6′s size and lack of a fuel surcharge that was introduced to help taxi drivers cover the cost of expensive fuel.

From Reuters:

The pilot project, which could be replicated in other cities, underpins China’s ambitious plans to put at least half a million electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrids on the road by 2015.

The country is already the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels and other human activities that scientists say are causing global warming.

As the world’s largest and fastest-growing auto market, China’s carbon footprint can only grow.

To bolster China’s energy security, Beijing has pronounced the electric vehicle industry a top priority, earmarking $1.5 billion annually for the next 10 years in the hope it can transform the country into one of the leading producers of clean vehicles.

But even with government support and the popular support of e-taxi customers, challenges remain for electric vehicles such as the e-taxis to gain broader acceptance and widespread use.

Charging stations are few and far between, repair shops are hard to find and the cars are costly. Even after generous government support, the Shenzhen e-taxi costs 80 percent more than the Volkswagen Santana that ordinarily cruises the streets of Shenzhen.

“The electric car is still too expensive and we ended up paying a lot more than for a (VW) Santana, even with government subsidies,” said Du Jun, general manager of Pengcheng E-taxi, the taxi operator participating in the pilot project.

Local automakers, from SAIC Motor to Dongfeng Motor Group Co, have pledged massive investments in greener vehicles. Global automakers, including BMW and Nissan Motor, are also working with local governments to roll out their E-Mini and Leaf respectively.

The country’s investment in the electric vehicle industry has no comparable program in the United States, although the U.S. Congress is considering a bill that would allocate $2.9 billion for a program to help develop the infrastructure for the widespread use of electric cars.

Germany’s cabinet agreed on plans in May to boost the country’s electric auto sector with billions of euros in subsidies, aiming to have 1 million of the cars on the road by 2020. Berlin’s move will double state support for research and development to 2 billion euros through 2013.

For China to hit its EV targets however, will mean quickly winning market acceptance for an untested technology.

“I think it’s going to be a very, very long time because the Chinese consumer, at the end of the day, is very pragmatic and wants a reliable car with a gasoline engine. They don’t want to be the ones experimenting,” said Michael Dunne, president of industry consultancy Dunne & Co. in Hong Kong.

“You’re going to see government fleets buying, buses buying, not a mass movement toward electrics, definitely within the five years.”

HAPPY RIDERS, WARY OPERATOR

In 2009, the Chinese government picked Shenzhen, along with 12 other cities, to lead the migration to green vehicles. Shenzhen and Hangzhou are the only ones attempting to launch e-taxi fleets.

State-controlled Pengcheng E-Taxi, partly owned by BYD, a major domestic manufacturer of green vehicles, was incorporated in March 2010. Fifty e6 cabs, made by the Warren Buffett-backed automaker, hit the roads in the city three months later.

“People are really interested in the car. Over 90 percent of customers start asking questions once they get in. And it’s not just me. All my colleagues have similar experiences as well,” said Zeng Xiweng, one of the company’s top drivers.

Shenzhen resident Daniel Li recently took a ride in an electric taxi, one of the red cars with a wavy white band around the body that have been operating around the southern Chinese city for more than a year.

“I like the car. It’s big and sturdy, pretty much like an SUV but not as noisy. It also saves me the 3 yuan fuel surcharge,” the 32-year old software engineer said as he got out of the taxi. “The problem is there aren’t many out there.”

BYD is using the pilot project to gather market feedback and make adjustments to the vehicles before rolling out the electric car nationwide.

“We had anticipated a lot of problems early on, but that did not happen and the data we’ve collected are actually better than what we got in lab tests,” Stella Li, senior vice president of BYD, said in an interview.

But for Du Jun of Pengcheng, the project’s hurdles are apparent. The company is still sitting on a big loss that Du blames on hefty upfront investments, insufficient charging spots and the limited distance that an EV can travel per charge.

And then there’s the cost. Though cheaper to operate, BYD’s e6 taxi costs 179,800 yuan ($28,000) after deducting 120,000 billion yuan in subsidies, compared with less than 100,000 yuan for Volkswagen’s Santana.

In Hangzhou, a similar green pilot program stumbled when all the 30 of the city’s electric taxis, which appeared on the streets in late January, were pulled from service in April after one cab’s engine compartment caught fire. The fleet resumed operations in June.

“Taxis are definitely a smart way for people to gain the kind of practical hands-on, in-the-field experience, but it will be very closely watched,” said William Russo, an industry veteran who runs the Synergistics consulting firm in Beijing.

LONG-TERM BET

For their part, automakers have decided that China’s green-car drive is a good bet, but BYD has more at stake than others.

The company, 10 percent-owned by Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, has been pushing more aggressively into clean technologies, from plug-in hybrids to energy storage facilities. The company recently raised $219 million in an IPO in Shenzhen to help fund battery research.

It has sold several hundred of the F3DM plug-in hybrid in China so far, more than any other domestic automakers, and its e6 will be available in showrooms in Beijing and Shenzhen in the second half.

BYD plans to deliver 250 more e6 cabs to Pengcheng by August. It will also provide 200 of its electric buses in coming months to the city’s public transportation system.

An electric sedan, jointly developed BYD and Daimler, will also be launched by 2013, Li said.

Green cars have yet to take off with ordinary consumers, though, despite consumer subsidies that Beijing started offering last year in some cities.

In Shanghai for example, a metropolitan area with a population of more than 20 million, there are only 10 registered electric cars, while the number in Hangzhou is only slightly higher at 25, according to China Business News.

“Consumers are less concerned about government interests. They are more concerned about the economics and the real practical side of what it means to own an electric vehicle,” said Synergistics’ Russo. “They are not going to buy an EV to save the planet. They will buy it only when it saves them money.”

2013 Porsche Cayman Spied Up Close

2013 Porsche Cayman (spy-photo)

We now have much closer shots of the next Cayman, and they reveal a more 911-like silhouette and front end. The roof appears flatter than the current car’s, and we can see just how much the stretched wheelbase affects things like the size of the rear window. Less exciting: This prototype appears to have some kind of sensor in the front fascia’s center opening, suggesting some kind of laser- or radar-based system like active cruise control will be offered. Read on for everything we know about Porsche’s next mid-engine coupe.

Toyota Prius Plus Performance Package Brings Body Kit and Lower Springs

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

The Toyota Prius is pretty much a rolling anathema for enthusiasts, so you’re probably not shocked that we greet the announcement of a performance package for the tadpole-shaped hybrid with some doubt. Nevertheless, mining the go-fast expertise of its Toyota Racing Development (TRD) division, Toyota has bundled a ground-effects package, 17-inch five-spoke forged aluminum wheels, “track-tuned” springs that lower the Prius by 1.1 inches up front and 1.3 inches in back, and a rear anti-roll bar to create the Plus Performance package. Toyota gives customers who opt for the kit a choice between white, silver, gray, and black exterior paints, and even throws in unique badges and floor mats.

Rather than play up the sporty additions to the hilt, Toyota is adamant that vehicles with the Plus package are still Priuses at heart. According to the company, the aero bits actually lower the car’s coefficient of drag and the lightweight forged aluminum wheels prevent any untoward weight gain, lest the mods come at the expense of fuel efficiency.

The comprehensive handling upgrades do seem to lend a whiff of authenticity to the concept of a “sporty Prius,” though, and we must admit that it looks rather purposeful sitting low on its 17-inch wheels—especially coated with the gray or black paint.

The Prius Plus package will be limited, says Toyota, and it will add $3699 to the price of a Prius Two, Three, or Four, and $2999 to the price of a Prius Five. (Those are trim levels, natch.) We’ll let you know if it lives up to the (modest) hype when we can get a PPP-equipped car to test.

2013 BMW 3-Series Spied Again, But This Time We Get to See the Interior

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

On the outside, there isn’t anything new to report since we spotted a 2013 BMW 3-series mule back in May, unless you’re really into California license plates, which these cars are sporting. The real story here is on the inside, where, to paraphrase one iconic Californian, certain things have come to light.

A few details inside the next 3 will be familiar, like a steering wheel that looks like a simpler version of the one in the 5-series, plus a few of the buttons. But overall, the changes are quite thorough. The updated IP includes new speedometer and tach faces, plus new screens at the bottom that will display trip computer and infotainment details, while the car’s new navigation screen draws inspiration from the new 6-series, sitting atop the dashboard like a teeny flat-panel TV.

And then there are the buttons. For the radio controls, they’re now convex rather than flat, and the HVAC cluster below is reshaped and incorporates a central screen we haven’t seen on any current BMWs. Our favorite change, however, is the DSC button that’s been repositioned right above the ignition button. It’s the perfect placement for starting the engine and turning off the nannies with unprecedented efficiency. Do you think that falls under BMW’s new EfficientDynamics initiatives?

The 2013 3-series is expected to debut in Frankfurt this fall and should arrive on our shores sometime in 2012. (Check out our previous 2013 3-series spy shots here.)

Fancypants Mini Inspired By Goodwood Priced in the U.K.: Costs More than Double a Cooper S

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

Mini has priced the 2012 Mini Inspired by Goodwood (full details here) in the U.K. For those in need of a refresher, it’s a Cooper S completely worked over by none other than fellow BMW Grouper Rolls-Royce; it walked the catwalk at this year’s Shanghai auto show. And, uh, it will be expensive. How expensive? Well, before we tell you, allow us to state that a standard Mini Cooper S costs £18,015 in Britain—$28,849 at current exchange rates. Here’s what the Goodwood Mini offers above and beyond that model: an interior and exterior pored over by Rolls designers, who trimmed the cabin with the finest leathers, wood, and polished metal, and who subtly classed up the outside with a monochromatic treatment punctuated by chrome detailing.

For this Roller massage, Mini is asking £41,000—and there’s no need to grab a calculators to understand how expensive that is. The Goodwood’s price is more than double that of the car on which it’s based. At current exchange rates the Goodwood doesn’t quite “ring in” so much as it “thud in” at a whopping $65,657. Of course, when they sell a few of these little buggers over here, it’s more likely that the price in dollars will look something like the one in pounds sterling: We figure $40K to $45K is a good rough estimate.

It might help to think of the Mini Goodwood as something of a tiny Rolls-Royce, which would make it the least expensive new Roller available. Furthermore, the Goodwood Mini’s single competitor, the Aston Martin Cygnet, costs £30,995 in the U.K., some triple the £9995 required for the Toyota iQ which serves as that model’s roots. Thus, the Mini’s luxury-version-to-cheap-version price ratio is a more-favorable 2.28:1 versus the Cygnet’s 3.10:1, making it a something of a value in the highly competitive tiny, sybaritic hatchback class. Mini will only produce 1000 of the Goodwood Minis, and British customers can place orders for one starting today.

Swappable Battery News: Better Place Opens Its First European Station, and the Renault Fluence is Cheap in the U.K.

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

Better Place, an Israeli company that developed an automated electric-vehicle-battery swap station, expanded beyond the Middle East this week, opening its first station in Europe. The Denmark station will function as do the other Better Place stations in Israel, automatically removing the enormous battery pack from a special Renault Fluence Z.E. electric car and reinstalling a fresh unit. This holds a great deal of promise for EVs; current electric vehicle technology is limited not only by battery capacity and recharge time, but by infrastructural hurdles like a lack of available charging stations. A battery switching station—itself a gargantuan bit of infrastructure that would need to be paid for and installed—helps solve at least some of these issues by swapping the depleted battery pack out of an electric car for a fresh, fully charged battery pack in a timely manner, eliminating the typical several-hour wait for a full battery recharge.

At the same time, Renault is launching the Fluence Z.E. in the U.K., and has priced the vehicle very reasonably. How reasonably? Try £17,850 after a £5000 government grant for plug-in cars. At current exchange rates, that translates to $28,535, a whopping $5095 than a base Nissan Leaf here in the States. (More important, perhaps, is the relative affordability of the car in the U.K. A Mini Cooper S, for example, starts at roughly £18,000.) Customers are also on the hook for a $120 per month lease for the battery pack, as well.

The car that British shoppers will soon be able to buy features the same battery pack that’s compatible with Better Place’s switching stations—leading us to think that the Israeli firm has plans to expand its operations to the British Isles some time soon. Even without the station, of course, the Fluence Z.E. can recharge through a traditional power outlet, as does the Leaf. The Fluence Z.E. will feature charging ports on each of its front fenders, an electric motor that produces 94-hp and 167 lb-ft of torque, and a claimed range of 115 miles.

Better Place plans to open 19 more battery switching stations in Denmark over the next nine months, and later in 2011 a switching station is set to open in Australia’s capital city, Canberra. The Renault Fluence Z.E. goes on sale next year as a 2012 model in Europe and Australia.

Better Place—a company that builds and integrates sustainable energy infrastructures—opened its first battery switching station in Denmark today, the first station of its kind in Europe. Better Place has already begun populating Israel with battery swapping stations, and the infrastructure is compelling for the future of EVs. Current electric vehicle technology is limited not only by battery capacity and recharge time, but by infrastructural hurdles like a lack of available charging stations. A battery switching station helps solve these issues by swapping the depleted battery pack out of an electric car for a fresh, fully charged battery pack in a timely manner, eliminating the typical several-hour wait for a full battery recharge.

A Roar in the Forest: How the P4/5C Racer Battled Fate at the Nürburgring 24 Hours

Ferrari P4/5 Competizione

Finishing isn’t the only thing—but it’s way ahead of the next-best option.

The Nürburgring 24 Hours is like The Perfect Storm in a forest. Rain, shine, or snow, more than 220,000 racing fans, powered by the best beer in the world, gather for the most overwhelming, pagan auto race on earth. Wall Streeter Jim Glickenhaus, owner and patron of the privateer Ferrari F430–based P4/5 Competizione—about which you can read in tantalizing depth here—was a first-timer at the 2011 event, and he was awestruck. “It’s like Woodstock! People camp out in the woods for days. There are rock concerts. There’s a burning man [like at Burning Ma]! It’s unbelievable!”
