Etios for China?

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

According to a Reuters report, Toyota are considering producing the Etios mini car for the Chinese market, the Etios of course being a developing market car. Now China already has the Vios which is also a developing market car, so could the Etios be placed under the Vios and be part of a seperate brand? Highly likely.

Toyota Motor Corp will launch a small car designed for the Chinese market as early as 2013, the Nikkei business daily reported.

The new car, powered by a 1.5-liter engine, will be slightly larger than the Etios and priced below 1 million yen ($12,853.6), the paper said.

Toyota intends to cut costs by using Etios parts. It plans to spend about 40 billion yen to prepare for local production of about 200,000 units a year, the paper said.     Toyota, which controlled about 5 percent of China’s automobile market in 2010, hopes to boost sales by launching the new model through two Chinese joint ventures, China FAW Group Corp and Guangzhou Automobile Group Co, the Nikkei said.     In India, Toyota plans to boost annual output for the Etios to 190,000 vehicles by the end of 2013 from the current 80,000.

Chinese EV’s are worse for the environment than their petrol equivalents

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

According to Environmental Finance:

Running an electric vehicle in China would emit more greenhouse gases than its petrol-fuelled equivalent, according to an expert in emissions reduction projects.

Despite the country’s expertise in electric vehicles and its growing manufacturing base – Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn only this week said it is ready to build an electric car in China – the country’s power grid is so dominated by dirty coal that recharging vehicles will release more global warming gases than putting petrol in their tanks, according to Juerg Gruetter of La Paz-based consultancy Gruetter Consulting.

Developers of projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), such as Gruetter, have to produce very detailed information about how many tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) each project will save, in order to earn carbon credits.

Following recent changes to the CDM methodology for electric vehicles, Gruetter is hoping to register four CDM projects in India, in collaboration with four electric scooter manufacturers. In total, about 1.5 million scooters will be sold over the next 10 years, which should save about 1.5 million tonnes of CO2e compared to running petrol-powered scooters. The 1.5 million carbon credits that can be claimed are worth €15 million ($21 million) at current prices, and the manufacturers are likely to use the income to build recharging infrastructure, Gruetter said.

The consultancy is also hoping to undertake similar projects in the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand.

But he said such projects are nigh-on impossible in China because the grid emissions are so high. There are regional differences, but the situation is “virtually nationwide” Gruetter said. Powering a scooter in China with grid electricity would emit about 20 grams of CO2e more per kilometre than running it on petrol.

“It’s worse for electric cars, in fact, as these tend to be less energy efficient – electric scooters are relatively much better than gasoline scooters while electric cars are relatively not that much better,” Gruetter said.

Gruetter Consulting has pioneered CDM projects in the transport sector, registering the TransMilenio rapid transit project in Bogotá, Columbia in 2006. The company is also working on a high-speed rail CDM project in South Korea.

MG3 – in review

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

We finally got our hands on the MG3 some 4 months after it hit the market in China and 7 months after it was unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show. At the Guangzhou Auto Show we got our first taste of what the MG3 was all about, and we left unimpressed: the plastics were cheap, the seats were uncomfortable and the dashboard a let-down. What exactly happened between the launch and production happening is not entirely clear, the MG3 we drove was anything but a cheap small car, it’s a competent car and a possible rival to the Chinese built Ford Fiesta and other joint venture produced cars in the Chinese market – I’d even go as far as saying this is the first Chinese car I would buy with my own money.

Small cars are not really my cup of tea, for far too long they have been designed with the female consumer in mind and lack the raw power appeal that would bring a man into the driving seat, look at the current Nissan Micra (March) or the Toyota Yaris for good examples of cars that were built with the more feminine consumer in mind, only the Suzuki Swift has always been the gender neutral super mini but now the MG3 has arrived.

The MG3 is based on an entirely new platform with the heavy design and engineering work happening in the UK but the production happening in China, of course when the MG3 hits the market in Europe in the next 18 months (MG UK are predicting an end of 2012 launch for the 3 in the UK) it is highly likely to be a different specification to the Chinese markets offerings. The MG6 has been like marmite in the UK with consumers either loving or hating MG’s new bold corporate nose, the design has been controversial in the MG Owners Club and has split the ear hair brigade down the middle when it comes to answering the all important question: Is the MG6 a real MG? The6’s biggest drawback from fans and critics alike are its cheaper plastics and lack of proper grunt engine, we can safely say that this is not the case in the 1.5L MG3. It appears that MG have learned quickly from the MG6 and have introduced solid chunky plastics into the 3, power is not lacking either.

Our test car had 5 adults on board, two members of the MG sales team and three journalists, with the air conditioner working on full to battle the 38 degree Shanghai weather and Berlinda Carlisle’s Heaven is a Place on Earth (not our choice) blasting over the ample stereo we took to Shanghai’s elevated highways and crowded inner city streets to see what the 3 could do. Let’s just say the 1.5L engine producing 107bhp to the front wheels was more than capable of propelling us to 100kph and beyond, waving in and out of heavily congested traffic on the elevated expressways was not an issue either. Gear swapping was done by an AMT gearbox which mixes the ability to swap gears manually or throw the car into automatic mode for easy driving, no 0-100kph (0-62mph) times were quoted by the official brochure, but the MG representative present told us a time of roughly 11 seconds for the AMT but the manual is supposedly much faster. The gearbox is not exactly accurate and takes half a second to hit the next gear but it does the job and keeps costs down, but the exhaust note is the big surprise here – who would have thought an economy micro car would let out a decent sound? The interior has some interesting design traits that we haven’t seen elsewhere in MG’s and Roewe’s, the control buttons on the steering wheel are certainly iPod inspired, and the shock of white on the door handles, hand brake and also the stereo break up the monotony of the design.  The seats are made from a strong material and are on par with what you find in the Skoda Fabia or VW Polo, oddly there is no leather option yet.

Storage room seems to be an issue with the trunk only carrying 256 litres of space and only two cup holders up at the front. The dash plastics are very solid and on par with the Skoda Fabia, the roof on this model did of course come with the Union Jack to give the MG3 some added personality, something that the Skoda and VW alternatives are lacking in. The centre console had gained a very clear GPS unit which was an extra option for this model and does not come as standard, there was also a Bluetooth unit for those that want to talk on the go without breaking any laws, parking sensors are also fitted to the rear as standard for those that cant park a small car.

From driving the MG3, even though it was for a relatively short time, it was clear that the designers had gone out of their way to create something is not just a commercial product created with the sole goal of filling a segment. Obviously a fair amount of blood sweat and tears have gone into developing the MG3 to make it into a competitive product, and this is what separates it from the competition who are just bringing out new generations of their older models to satisfy a segment. MG fans will never be a unified bunch when it comes to deciding if they like the bold new MG styling, but they will no doubt enjoy seeing the company grow back its diminished reputation with a new younger fan base.

Next generation Ford Focus sedan sighted in China

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

For Ford, the Focus is quite simply its bread and butter car and without it Ford would be in a much dire a situation in the Chinese market. The Focus sells in excess of 10,000 units per month on a regular basis and has become the go to car for any budding middle class Chinese consumer that wants a new car at around the 100,000rmb area. The next generation Focus has been spotted in China on several occasions, but this is the first time that we have seen the sedan on Chinese roads.

2012 Cadillac SRX First Drive: A New V-6 Cures the SRX’s Ills

2012 Cadillac SRX 3.6

Cadillac tightens its focus on the Lexus RX.

The Cadillac SRX’s lead development engineer, Steve Kline, kicked off the debut of the 2012 Cadillac SRX by telling us, “If we’d told you back in 2009 that the SRX would move from number nine in the segment to number two behind the Lexus RX, you probably would have laughed.” Kline is right. C/D loved the previous, CTS-based SRX. Its rear-drive dynamics and interior packaging allowed it to win a comparison test and multiple 5Best Truck trophies, but failed to endear it to customers. We would not have believed that a front-drive-based SRX would rocket up the sales charts, but that’s exactly what happened.

New Jeep GC: It’s a Long-Term Thing

Jeep overhauled its Grand Cherokee for 2011, redesigning it from the contact patches to the roof and transferring it to the same platform that hosts the Mercedes-Benz ML-class. The Benz-derived structure is solid, but it also adds about 200 pounds versus the previous Grand Cherokee. Still, our first impressions were positive—we awarded the Jeep first place in a four-truck comparison test—so we ordered one up for our long-term fleet.

2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 4MATIC

Mercedes’ third-gen SUV lounges lazily in the lap of luxury. Off-roading? A little. Fun? Not much.

Before the recession, Mercedes-Benz had no trouble selling 34,000 MLs in the U.S. each year. For 2011, the company’s best-known SUV is back on track to hit 30,000 sales. Right now, in fact, ML sales are up 14.5 percent. “It puts us in a funny position,” confesses Mercedes U.S.A. president and CEO Ernst Lieb. “We’re spending millions to replace a car that remains a huge profit center.” It’s like replacing Yankee Stadium’s hot dogs with, say, toaster waffles. Are you sure you want to mess with a good thing?

2012 Audi A6 Hybrid Driven: Audi Boards the Hybrid Bandwagon

2012 Audi A6 hybrid

Audi’s satisfying A6 gets hybridized—and somewhat less satisfying.

Does driving a hybrid change a person? We’d rather leave that question unanswered, but driving a hybrid does change your driving style. All of a sudden, even the leadfoots around here shift their attention to the energy flow charts blinking in the instrument cluster, we don’t plot to pass every car in sight, and we make real attempts to maximize fuel economy and battery recharging. Well, at least for a few minutes.

Behold Helios, the Solar-Hybrid Hollywood Production Trailer

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

When a press release starts with a headline characterizing something as “the Prius” of anything, it becomes literary tee-ball for scribes who may not be so pious about the Prius. We usually pass on such low-hanging fruit, but a new solar-hybrid production trailer dubbed Helios, “the Prius of production trailers,” is just too juicy not to snatch off the PR tree. For those outside of Hollywood, production trailers are the mobile homes of the entertainment industry, the things that provide movie stars and production crews respite from the sun during shoots.

Helios was created by King Kong Production Vehicles of Newport Beach, California. And here we thought King Kong’s environmental efforts were limited to farting kilotons of CO2 into the atmosphere after each banana binge. KKPV’s efforts, on the other hand, include the utilization of a solar generator in addition to a bio-diesel generator, as well as the installation of bamboo cabinetry, recycled-glass desks and countertops, and recycled-rubber flooring. King Kong claims there are “more than 12 additional important environmental, state-of-the-art advances that make Helios the most environmentally friendly trailer ever built,” but apparently doesn’t find them important enough to mention individually. We presume they would make the Prius proud, if in fact there was any connection to the Prius. (Toyota assures us there is not.)

Testimonials from famous Priusites such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Julia Roberts were not made available, probably because there aren’t any; King Kong says that the sole Helios trailer currently in use has been used as a production office, not a star trailer. King Kong does claim, however, that during one long production day recently, the solar generator alone provided all necessary power, saving 28 gallons of diesel fuel.

Speaking of diesel fuel, however green the humongous Helios trailer may be when parked, it still has to be pulled around by a diesel-swilling truck, somewhat diminishing its Prius cred. Might we suggest that task be assigned to one of Toyota’s upcoming Hino-branded hybrid commercial trucks, considered to be—you guessed it—the Prius of commercial trucks? Add regenerative trailer brakes and King Kong might as well call Helios the Priusstream.

Audi A6 Hybrid Confirmed For U.S.

Posted by: Dent Removal  /  Category: Automobiles

Officially, Audi still refuses to confirm that the A6 hybrid will be offered in the U.S. The fact that the hybrid will be built exclusively as a sedan was a strong indicator of U.S.  availability, a hint underscored by an Audi marketing executive’s admission that “hybrid and station wagon markets are mutually exclusive.”

Now, we have confirmation from several reliable sources within Audi that the hybrid will be sold in the U.S. Its basic technology will be identical to the European version’s: The EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder will be mated to an electric motor, and power will be transmitted to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic. The power rating likely will be identical to the European car’s, at a combined 245 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.

The U.S.-bound version will differ only in minor details. It will be launched in the 2012 calendar year, just as Audi introduces an attractive alternative: the A6 3.0 TDI diesel, with around 250 hp. Pricing for both will be similar—somewhere north of $55,000.
